Why we never put aluminium in a deodorant

Sweat is not the enemy. Here is how an aluminium-free deodorant keeps you fresh without plugging anything.

White pump bottle, sponge and wooden brush on a pale surface

Antiperspirants work by dissolving aluminium salts into your sweat, where they form a gel plug in the duct. It is effective, and for some people it is the right choice. We just never wanted to make one.

Sweat is how your body cools itself. It is almost entirely water and has no smell of its own. The smell arrives later, when bacteria on the skin break down the small amount of fat and protein in it. So the job of a deodorant is not to stop sweat. It is to stop that breakdown.

What we use instead

Zinc ricinoleate, a salt of castor oil, traps odour molecules so they cannot reach your nose. Probiotics crowd out the bacteria that cause the smell in the first place. Tapioca starch soaks up moisture so you feel dry, and shea butter keeps the formula soft enough to glide.

The result is a deodorant that lasts 48 hours, leaves no marks on clothes and does not sting after shaving. If you are switching from an antiperspirant, give your skin two weeks. It will settle.
