How to layer textiles without it looking like a showroom

Linen-covered sofa in a sunlit apartment

Most rooms do not need more things. They need the things they have to talk to each other. Textiles are the cheapest way to make that happen, and also the easiest way to overdo it. Here is the method we use in the showroom, which is really just three rules and a lot of restraint.

Start with the floor

The rug sets the temperature of the room. In a space with a lot of hard surfaces, a flatweave wool rug in an undyed tone softens everything without announcing itself. Go bigger than feels comfortable: the front legs of every seat should sit on it.

Two textures, one family

Pick a single colour family, say oat and clay, and then vary texture instead of hue. A heavy bouclé cushion next to a smooth linen one in almost the same shade reads as considered. Five different colours read as a catalogue.

One thing that moves

A throw should look like someone just put it down. Fold it once, drape it over an arm, let it fall. The moment it is perfectly aligned the room stops looking like a home.

That is it. Floor first, texture over colour, one thing slightly out of place. The rest is editing.
