How to layer a scent so it lasts all day

Body wash, then oil, then deodorant, then a mist. The order matters more than you think.

Fragrance clings to moisture and fat. Dry skin lets it evaporate in an hour. That single fact explains almost everything about making a scent last.

1. Start in the shower

A body wash in the same scent leaves a faint base on the skin and, more importantly, leaves it hydrated. Pat dry rather than rubbing so you keep some of that water.

2. Seal it with oil or cream

Body oil on damp skin locks in water and gives the fragrance oils something to hold on to. Focus on pulse points: wrists, inner elbows, behind the knees, the base of the neck.

3. Deodorant, then mist

Deodorant covers the place you are most likely to notice a scent change. A body mist on hair and clothes carries the top notes, which are the ones people notice when you walk past. Reapply the mist in the afternoon if you want the citrus back.
